Why UX is not what you think

Let me tell you a story…

Yes my story. It starts with a dream where I am using my paint brush and creating the best art on the planet on the canvas, then running on the street shouting I am the best designer ever.

Your dreams might be the same if you are an aspiring designer. But let me be blunt, you are never gonna achieve that revelation. UX is nothing like that.

It’s not art.

It’s not painting.

It’s not about colors.

It’s not about you being creative.

Why does the text seem like a ladder here.

So if UX is not all these things then what is it.

Please stop the ladder, please stoooooooooooooop.

What is UX?

UX is about understanding system. It’s about understanding the problem scope and gaining as much system knowledge as possible so when you are designing something you are in sync with the software, the architecture, the dev effort that it would take.

Yes, you are the voice of the user in your organisation but you can’t shout about it every time. You have to maintain limitations from every end and create the best solution for the user.

Your company might say this is hard to achieve in development and compromise on user experience but you have to stand for it and say its important to do.

But let me be bitter here…

IT DOES NOT WORK EVERY TIME.

Unless you are a UX designer for a brand new project where there is nothing built you can dictate everything. But if it’s an already running system, you can’t be the dictator(not literally). Before you saw the system, the system is already built. The architecture, the backend of the system is already up and running. There is a certain way the database is organised, some data is being captured which some might not.

Your design might require certain data to be shown on the screen which developers won’t be able to fetch from the DB. What you will do as a designer?

You have to agree and compromise on the user right?

NO. A BIG NO. BIGGER THAN YOU THINK NO.

Ask the developers for future scope. Ask them to take up that item in the next sprint or whatever you call it. Fight for your user. Because if you won’t, nobody else will.

So, UX is not always about the user when you are deploying a solution but it is always on the scope to create the best solution for the user.

THAT IS UX. STANDING UP FOR THE USER.

UX is not a creative field, it’s a very analytical and logical field.
If you like to think deep and blast the core of things, welcome to the most interesting job on the planet.

No I haven’t done other jobs. I just like to say it.
